Lighting: the foundation of a Smart Building
When we think of a building’s foundation, we think of the ground below us. The slab of concrete supporting the walls, the floors and ceiling; ultimately supporting everything inside of the building. The foundation supports the entire infrastructure of the building creating an environment of safety and security for the building’s occupants, assets, systems and utilities.
However, the foundation in a traditional sense is not what makes a building smart. A Smart Building takes the building described above and adds the means to collect data, analyze the data and ultimately adapt the environment. The foundation needed to support a Smart Building cannot be found in a concrete slab but instead in a network of interconnected devices and apps to add the intelligence to the building.
What is the best way to build this foundation for Smart Buildings? Pragmatically, the answer lies in one of a building’s system that has existed in most buildings for over a century: Lighting. In this presentation, we’ll explore how the lighting system in a building can easily provide the hardware to create the foundation and how Bluetooth can provide the technology to connect other systems, and finally how to pull everything together.
Jeremy Ludyjan, Head of Lighting Solutions at Tuya
Jeremy Ludyjan, LC has more than two decades of LED, Lighting, and Semiconductor experience. He is currently the Head of Lighting Solutions at Tuya, an IoT solution provider. At Tuya, Jeremy is leading Tuya’s professional lighting initiative by providing lighting manufacturers and service providers with a full IoT ecosystem of tools including, among other things, software, apps and cloud services. Jeremy has also been a consultant for IoT companies and lighting companies to develop and execute their IoT strategies. Previously, Jeremy was the Senior Director of Field Marketing with Fulham Co., Inc. where he was tasked with business development for Fulham’s top tier customers and for controls companies, and to enable Fulham’s global sales teams to effectively promote Fulham’s controls product. Before Fulham, Jeremy was the General Manager of Velocity SSL. Jeremy has also held various executive roles at Bulbrite and Illumitex in sales, marketing, R&D, product development, manufacturing and quality. Prior to that he developed the sales and marketing strategy for Samsung LED’s professional LED retrofits in North America, while overseeing the component and light engine sales. He also served as the Director of Sales of North America for Everlight and held positions at TTI and Mouser Electronics in product marketing and management for LEDs and semiconductors. Jeremy is the Vice President of the Austin section of the Illuminating Engineering Society and has his Lighting Certificate (LC) from the NCQLP.
